Guwahati, 3rd April (northeastnews): Feeling the serious shortage of women in Assam Police the state government has decided to provide 30% reservation for women in the forthcoming new recruitment of 5624 police personnel which includes 130 Sub Inspectors, 3643 AB Constables and 1851 UB Constables, informed State-level Police Recruitment Board Chairman Pradeep Kumar here today.
Addressing the media Pradeep Kumar, Chairman of the Board informed that in addition to the results of 1420 Armed Branch Constables results from three districts of Dhubri, Barpeta and Nagaon being declared today they are also declaring the results of 525 Forest Guards, 135 Jail Wardens and 145 Constables of Assam Industrial Security Force in addition to the result of 90 people (81 male and 9 Females) who have been selected for the new Rhino Protection Force to be setup and equipped with latest automatic weapons.
The Chairman informed that it is unfortunate that the women in Assam are not very healthy thus most of them fail to qualify the minimum physical standards set for passing the recruitment tests, thus to ensure larger presence of women in police force this time they have reduced the physical standards for qualifying marks for women candidates, and informed that last time out of 104 vacancies for women Sub Inspectors only 40 could qualify on physical grounds, this time they have reduced their test from 1600 meters to 800 meters so that they can get at least 39 women Sub Inspectors out of a total of 130 posts.
Talking about the shortage of police personnel in the state specially in Guwahati Commissionerate the Chairman informed that in a force having 67000 men in uniform at least 2000 retire every year, so to fill the gap this will have to be catered for every year, but was hopeful after the new recruitment and those going under training the situation will ease to a large extent.
On the question of Reservation of posts for different categories of people Pradeep Kumar said, the government has decided to give 2% jobs to Special Police Officers, Sportsmen, Home Guards, VDP's and former militants besides recruiting 10% people from 80 Police Stations which are ht by militancy to attract the youth to uniform but he made it clear that in no way the total reservation will exceed 49%.
On the question of 90 people selected for Rhino Protection Force the Chairman said, whoever might train them it will be best to train them as commandoes so that they can operate in tough conditions with every type of weapon.
